U.S.S. Maryland (BB-46)
battleship U.S.S. Maryland (BB-46) was the pride of the
United States Navy and the worlds most powerful dreadnought
when commissioned in 1921. Slightly damaged during the attack
on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7th 1941, the Maryland became the
first of the damaged Pearl Harbor battleships to return
Dubbed Old Mary or Fighting Mary,
she was also called Old Line or Free State
Battlewagon in honor of the famous Continental infantry
unit enshrined in the states nickname. In action throughout
the Pacific war, Maryland was damaged, repaired and improved
several times. The ship was honored with seven battle stars
for its service during World War Two.
After the wars end in August 1945, the Maryland participated
in Operation Magic Carpet, the return of American
service personnel from Hawaii to the west coast of the United
